I've done a little bit of research and had a good think about all of this.

By modern standards, we are using quite low resolutions here. When looking at a 800x600 screen, the dots are quite big in relation to the overall screen size.
Also, just changing from 800x600 to 1024x768 is a big change, you're increasing the number of dots (in just one direction) by a quarter and when using bitmaps, that can easily make a nice image suddenly go quite poor.
I understand it all a but clearer now!
