Default Real touchscreen in F/A-18E

Not sure the best thread/forum to post in... but here it goes.

I'm kinda interested in now in a 8" x 8" touchscreen. Is there such an animal? I found this info on the web regarding cockpit instruments on the F/A-18E.

The single seat F/A-18E will have the 5 x 5-inch central display of the F/A-18C replaced by a new 8in x 8in flat panel active matrix LCD. The two other 5in x 5in multipurpose CRT screens are retained, as is the existing HUD, except that the control panel just below it will be replaced by a monochrome touch-sensitive screen. All displays (two CRTs, one color LCD, and one monochrome LCD) will be made by Kaiser. The rear cockpit of the F/A-18F had identical instrumentation, except that it has no HUD and the 8in x 8in screen is located above the landscape-format touch screen.

Here is a good photo for reference.

I know this is a strange question, but has anybody ever come across a SQUARE touchscreen for sale out there? Eventually (in a year or two) I think I'd like to start a dedicated F/A-18 pit project. Just getting ideas for it now.

Maybe I just have to go with the 8" x 6" version, which is what everybody here is using, and add in those comms dials/buttons off to the side.

The square monitors are primarily for military or scientific use, and hence have the price tag to reflect that.

you can use a larger screen with scaling (black bars on left and right) and cover them assuming the panel will be set back behind some sort of covering

or maybe you could make a larger profile and have buttons that go through and hit the screen (and use the lcd for lighting behind the buttons?)

Yep, that is what I am planning to do really. Just use the 8" touchscreen that I have and build a more or less decent looking case/housing for it. Really like it, it looks cool and very functional.

The only way to improve on this TB is to figure out ways to get data back out of the program to the screen -- and that is a limitation not of TB but the sims that we have out there right now.
